Calculations & Testing

Is it strong enough? Will it blow over? We can tell you

Our in-house engineers can produce calculations for all of our products, in any combination. They can also produce calculations for ideas you have, making sure you get it right first time. Recent examples range from calculations for a floating studio complex for the BBC to calculations of the forces affecting helium filled branding balloons for outdoor use.

We are often asked to check and interpret calculations done by other engineers, as any results will depend on the information available and the precise brief. A recent example was a perfectly good set of calculations for a temporary structure that on close examination had been based on an assumption that the structure would be bolted to a concrete base. It was to be used in a grass covered park......

The final proof

Load Testing

After all the calculations, many items (or combinations) need the certainty of testing. This can be 'proof' testing which checks the Safe Working Load with a percentage overload and should not do any damage. The alternative is 'destruction' testing, where items are made to fail under controlled and measurable conditions. From the results we can determine Safe Working Loads and Factors of Safety.

Frequently there is a need to know how much things weigh, for a variety of reasons. We have the machinery in-house to pick-up and weigh items up to 24 tons and we have a drive on weigh-bridge that can weigh up to 50 tons in 10 kg increments. This is calibrated to Trading Standards requirements for public use and issues legally valid weight certificates.

Load Testing

We have a range of specialist equipment, including our 'Nudge' test bed that can apply compression and tension forces of up to 200 kN (approx 20 tons) in 0.1 kN (approx 10 kgs) steps. Our 50 ton weigh-bridge can be used to conduct full-size uplift tests to work out what various wind forces will actually do to a structure.
