Tour de France

Le Tour De France 07- Grand Départ Custom fabricated roof

  • When Le Tour De France announced the historic start in Central London, Grand Depart producers innovision approached Star Events Group to work with them in designing a unique focal point for the world’s second largest sporting event. Working closely with the innovision design team this unique structure was presented for approval by all stake holders before fabrication began. Utilising many stock components to keep within budget, combined with in house fabrication of bespoke elements, this amazing stage was delivered on schedule and to budget in one of the world's most iconic locations. This element was one of over a dozen structures deployed to facilitate the start and worldwide broadcast of this unique event.

BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend

15m ‘Pyramid’ stage Pyramid Stage

  • A new focal point was required to show off the world’s leading DJ’s at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Preston in 2007. Event producers SJM Concerts Ltd presented a brief to Star Events Group’s design team with the need for a stunning appearance coupled with demanding production requirements. The structure was designed in house to not only provide a well lit focus for the artists, but to also fly 1,000kg of video above the performers, allow positioning of high powered lasers within the apex and provide support for audio re-enforcement. Designed to TDS guidance from a majority of stock components the structure now forms a key part of the annual Big Weekend infrastructure.

Liverpool City of Culture - Opening ceremony

Container based stage on roof 'Container stage

  • The producers of this event wanted a focal point to be Ringo Starr playing on the roof of the Grade 1 listed (and recently refurbished) St Georges Hall on Lime Street in Liverpool. The rest of the event deployed lots of shipping containers as a design statement and it was decided to create a stage within an old shipping container. However, the roof of the portico entrance was some 23m above the crowd and was completely non-load bearing. The sight-lines were improved by stacking the stage container on top of another one. Both containers and a substantial pyro 'header' were then supported above the roof on a pair of 'truss hangers' that took all the forces back to load bearing sections of the building. No invasive fixings of any kind were used. The lower container provided a useful location for power distro, amps and dimmers.

Hyde Park kerb ramp

Road Race kerb ramp

  • Limelight Sports Ltd approached SEGL to design a solution to overcome access issues to Hyde Park for the 2008 Royal Parks half Marathon. Traffic improvement works carried out since the 2007 event had left a raised traffic island in the middle of the main access route in to the south of Hyde Park causing a potential trip hazard for the 2008 competitors. Star Events engineers inspected the offending traffic island and liaised with the in house design team to fabricate a bespoke non slip 4m wide ramp with a gentle gradient to enable the runners to make the last few strides without hindrance into the park. The brief for the project involved deployment and recovery times of less than 1 hour and this requirement together with limited plant availability played a key part in the final modular design.
